The View from the Studio…
… today is grey and gloomy. A disgruntled looking wood pigeon sits atop one of the conifers with his feathers puffed up and head hunched into his chest against the cold. Low clouds brush the roofs of the houses of the village and a chilly breeze riffles through the leaves on the trees. I’m happy to report that it’s finally stopped raining!
The pathetic fallacy is cute, as I’m also feeling a little grey this morning after not sleeping well and waking up stiff from heaving boxes about the house. More on the move later.
The purpose of this week’s art journal blog post is to catch you up on my creations from January and February so far. It’s been a gentle start to the year, with a lot of my concentration being diverted to the move and other behind the scenes plans.
My first finished piece of the year was a commissioned drawing of the iconic Christopher Lee as Dracula. I chose a simple portrait composition as his face is so strong. I loved the contrast between his pale skin and the darkness from whence he came, and this leant beautifully into working with fineliner pens to capture the details of the image.
The beginning of February saw what would have been the 60th birthday of Brandon Lee. As a teenager in the nineties, it was impossible for my baby-goth self to escape the influence of 1994’s film The Crow, starring Lee as Eric Draven. As it’s one of my favourite movies, I drew an image to celebrate this role.
Initially loosely sketched in pencil and then inked using fineliners. The background was painted using highly pigmented black acrylic ink.
I’ve also just finished a personal project in ink, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to share that one publicly.
My plan for the next couple of weeks is to work on some new miniature art and Tiny Art Frames to take to The WhimsyGoth Market Spring-O-Ween event at the end of March. Time will tell how much I actually achieve before moving day.
Which leads me neatly on to the packing chaos that currently surrounds me and has temporarily (I hope) taken over my studio space. It’s quite cathartic to clear out possessions that are no longer needed or wanted. Letting go of objects that have lingered for too long offers a feeling of lightness and release that I wasn’t expecting.
The sorting process has perhaps made packing progress a little slower, but I know that future Hannah will thank me when I can unpack quickly at the other end!
A quick reminder…
As we get draw closer to moving day, I am temporarily closing both my Faire and Etsy shops as stock will be packed away and inaccessible.
If you are a stockist, please be aware that my wholesale catalogue on Faire will be closed from Friday 14th February 2025.
For Etsy shop customers, my store will be closed from 23rd February 2025.
Both shops will reopen once we’re settled, unpacked and able to fulfil your orders. I expect this to be mid to late March.
For those of you who have been patiently waiting for my commission order book to re-open, that will also happen in mid to late March.
Please remember to sign-up to The Spooky List (you can find the form below) to be the first to hear all updates.
